Tiny Eden Companion Planting

Most farm sims hide companions behind a sticker chart. Tiny Eden models them through root architecture. Bajka’s team grew the species in real Warsaw pots before coding them, and the official FAQ plus the plant-decisions dev log are blunt: two plants in one container compete for the same layer unless their roots occupy different depths.

The documented pairs

Press and FAQ examples that are safe to treat as canon:

Pair	Verdict	Why
Tomato + basil	Good	Tomatoes root deep; basil stays shallow. They do not fight for the same soil layer. Basil also helps with pests.
Cabbage + tomato	Bad	Cabbage strips nutrients tomatoes need. Both harvests suffer.

That is not a complete Pokédex. If the plant card does not mention a neighbour, split pots. Guessing is how you get two yellow plants and one refund thought.

Roots before recipes

Companion planting is a kitchen decision too. Tomato plus basil is the salad that how to cook wants. Cabbage next to tomato is two recipes sharing a famine. Plan the windowsill from the plant tier list so S-tier strawberries are not jammed against a heavy feeder.

Container volume is the other half. A shallow 3 L can hold basil. It cannot hold a fruiting tomato, companion or not. Demo growers needed 0.5 L → 3 L → 16 L for tomatoes. Put basil in the same 16 L only after the tomato has the depth. Do not “companion” them in a nursery cup.

Light and climate still count

Sharing a pot does not share a biome. A windowsill that is perfect for a sun tomato may cook a shade herb. Balconies are warmer than rooftops and colder than indoor rooms. If you pair plants, they still need a shelf that matches both temperature bands. How to expand is where you buy a second microclimate instead of forcing a bad marriage.

NPK is per pot, not per plant icon. Two hungry crops in one mix will race to the first low-nitrogen warning. The soil NPK helper is the chart; the HUD is the referee. Feed the named nutrient on that pot, then wait a 60:1 day before stacking another bottle.

How to set a companion pot in practice

1. Read both plant cards for volume, mix, light, and heat.
2. If either card wants a transplant soon, finish that chain first. Companions after, not during, a 0.5 L stage.
3. Mix the soil to the stricter recipe if they share a container. Extra sand on a clay-lover is not generosity.
4. Place the pot where the fussier species wants sun.
5. Water to the thirstier card, then watch Left Alt notifications in demo builds. See controls if the pot menu will not open.
6. Harvest into the kitchen. If one crop stalls, split them. Pride is not a nutrient.

What is not a companion system

Genetics (cash versus research on harvest) can roll odd varieties. A frost-resistant purple tomato is not a licence to ignore basil depth. Flowers that wilt to attract pollinators are a FAQ trick, not a pairing table. Drones will plant whatever you stocked in the station — they will not refuse a cabbage-tomato crime. Teach the station after you understand drones.

Demo versus 1.0

The pairs above come from official posts, not a datamined 1.0 spreadsheet. If 7 September adds a tooltip that contradicts this page, the tooltip wins. Practise the tomato-basil shelf in the demo while pots are cheap. Launch week is a bad time to discover cabbage.
